Would you like to take a smart and effective approach to habits? Habits are by their very nature Unconscious: They are behaviours driven by Unconscious motivators (self-judgements).
If in any moment a habit were Conscious, that would be a Choice, not a habit.
Therefore, given that the nature of a habit is that it is Unconscious, the way to end habitual behaviour is by:
